The 30 Day Music Challenge

There is a 30 day music challenge going down on Facebook at the moment.  Everyday there is a theme and you post a YouTube video of the song that fits it.  I'm copying Not Met Megan and condensing the 30 days into a more do-able version and catching up with everyone else by posting the first five in one bitesize chunk!

Day One:  Your Favourite Song
Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven is the one song that I keep coming back to when I try to pinpoint my favourite song.  It's a classic with Messrs Page and Plant doing what they do best.  It was also instrumental in me falling in love with my husband :)

Day Two: Your Least Favourite Song
The Climb by Joe McElderry stands for everything I hate.  A two bit wannabe being skyrocketed to overnight success by the voting public in a TV talent show (which pedestrianises any sign of genuine talent).  It's just yuck!  Rage Against the Machine beat this to the Christmas No.1.  It was the first download I ever bought...I helped defeat the Cowell empire and its assumption that it owned the charts.

Day Three: A Song That Makes You Happy
The Ugly Bug Ball is a wonderful, life affirming Disney song.  I made up a literal interpretive dance to it as a small child.  It makes me smile :)

Day Four:  A Song That Makes You Sad
I cry like a baby at this tragic Bobby Goldsboro song Honey.  The lyrics are like the script of a weepy.  It gets me everytime :(

Day Five:  A Song That Reminds You of Someone
My lovely 98 year old Nan who died in 2008, loved this song so much.  It was played at her funeral and we just know that she is up in heaven dancing to it with her husband Bill. xxx

Listography...5 Books for Toddlers

Photobucket

What a cute theme for a list!  I've had 22 years of baby book buying and have spent a fortune with the Book People and Red House.  I love baby books so much.  I love the pictures.  I love the sing song text. I love sharing them with my littlies and see them run their chubby little fingers along the words as they come to realise that the strange squiggles actually mean something!  I love it when the older children read to the younger ones and pass on favourite stories.  Books play a big part in our household, we have a Tidy Books Bookcase that I won just before Christmas.  It is filled with board books, lift the flap books, noisy books and story books.  Freddy sits down and pulls a book out and usually exclaims "Oh Wow!" as he opens the pages.  I hope his love of books continues and that he becomes a book worm like his sisters.

Sharing a story with Daddy.
Here are my pick of the top 5 books for babies that have received my kids' seal of approval!  We've enjoyed many an hour pouring through these books.

1:  Bears in Pairs is over 20 years old now and is still much loved with its rhyming couplets describing the bears on their way to a tea party.  "Tall Bear, Small bear, Hairy bear, Scary bear!"  The pictures are charming and my children have enjoyed trying to find all the bears on the final page showing them all at the tea party.
2: With a daughter called Megan, we had to buy the whole set of Meg and Mog books.  The quirky illustrations and the funny stories have had my children riveted.  We particularly like the one where they visit the vets.

3: Animal Pants will help nurture a love of toilet humour in even the youngest child.  We learn that skunks have smelly pants and a chameleon's pants change colour!  The brilliant illustrations are bold and bright.  It's a real favourite in our household!
4: Elmer the colourful elephant is such an appealing character who wants to look like everyone else so he rolls in berry juice.  I'd be glad to sport my patchwork colour scheme if I was Elmer...it's a funky Boho look!
5: The Ravenous Beast was Freddy's first favourite book that he shared over and over again with his Daddy.  The animals all try to out-hungry each other until the ravenous beast comes along and scoffs the lot of them!  Love it!

BornFree Twist 'n' Pop Straw Cup

BornFree was the first baby feeding company to be clear and open on its stance on BPA.  They created a range of bottles, cups, teethers and soothers that were completely free of this chemical.  The fear is that BPA can leach out into foodstuff which can be harmful to babies and toddlers.  BornFree  have paved the way to make safer products for our children!

One of their innovative products is the Twist 'n' Pop Straw Cup.  This 14 fl oz toddler cup has a twisting cap that exposes a soft silicone drinking straw for comfortable drinking.  The twist mechanism keeps the straw clean and reduces spills.  This child-friendly beaker is dishwasher safe and detachable into two parts making it easy to clean.

We were sent a BornFree Twist 'n' Pop Straw Cup to test out with Freddy.  I was impressed at the good size  of the beaker, which would make it ideal for a day out.  The twist mechanism was easy to use and I liked that the lid was in one part for easy cleaning.  The bottle was shaped and textured making it really easy for little hands to hold.

Freddy found it very easy to use the cup and sucked his juice up the straw without any problems.  Having a non-spill, closable, good sized bottle like this is a real bonus.  I can give Freddy a healthy juice drink, when we are out and about, as an alternative to children's ready-made, sports topped, bottled drinks.  It is just as convenient and easy to drink an  it will save money in the long run too.

As you can see Freddy loves his Twist 'n' Pop Straw Cup.  I'm happy that it is BPA free, easy to clean and comes with a resealable lid.  Freddy is just happy!! After all  BornFree do say "Babies Know Best!"

It is available in four bright colours and costs £5.99 from www.babybornfree.co.uk.

Wake Up and Smell the Coffee with Aromettes!

I always blog about my love of Coffee Shops...it's the smell that really does it for me...so when I was offered the chance of sampling Douwe Egbert's exciting new Aromettes, I jumped at the opportunity!

Aromettes are individually pressed ground coffee servings in the shape of a coffee bean. I was sent both the Smooth and Intense Aroma varieties.  Each tub contained 30 servings of fresh, ground coffee.

During the day I'm a decaffeinated coffee drinker, so when I have "real coffee" it's a real treat.  So I was very excited at the prospect of a 'proper cup of coffee from a proper cup of coffee pot' a.k.a. a cafetiere!

Opening the foil seal from the tub I was hit by the gorgeous smell of ground coffee....I was transported to my favourite coffee shops, inhaling that wonderful evocative scent.  The beans are enough for one cup of coffee so for me and my husband to indulge together we popped two in our cafetiere.  It was that simple.  No messy scoops or spilling grinds everywhere...just two beans, add water just off the boil, stir and leave for 3-4 minutes.  Being pressed ensures that the coffee remains at its very freshest.  The smell just got better as it brewed.

After 4 minutes we pressed our plunger and poured two cups of freshly brewed coffee in our cups.   Douwe Egbert's have really got it spot on.  The coffee was smooth, full of flavour and fresh.  The strength was perfect, eliminating any guess work over how much to put in.  It made a delightful cup of coffee.  It is good to know that we can recreate that perfection everytime we make some using one bean per cup.  So simple...it's genius!

Aromettes really appeal to me as I find making ground coffee a bit laborious and inconsistent.  However I do love the taste and of course that unbeatable aroma!  Priced at £3.69 a pack you get 30 Coffee House quality cups of coffee.  Perfect for when you want the unbeatable taste of real coffee.  They will definitely revolutionise coffee drinking Inside the Wendy House!

Innocent Veg Pots now Veg Soc Approved!

Innocent's Veg Pots are the most amazing, quick and easy vegetarian ready meals I've ever come across.  The brilliant team at Innocent sent me a box containing six varieties of Veg Pot to try, and I took my role of tester very seriously, tucking into each and every one over the week.

The range of flavours includes:

  • Indian Dahl Curry with spicy cauliflower, chickpeas and spinach.
  • Thai Coconut Curry with wild rice, edamame beans and lemongrass
  • Portuguese Red Pepper Piri Piri with potatoes, bravas, chilli and smoked paprika.
  • Moroccan Roasted Veg Tagine with butternut squash, giant couscous and coriander.
  • Roasted Aubergine Moussaka with borlotti beans, tomatoes and mint.
  • Mexican Sweet Potato Chilli with brown rice, roasted red peppers and smoked paprika.
Each pot consists of a delicious blend of fresh ingredients: vegetables, whole grains and tasty sauce with herbs and spices... and provides 3 of your 5 a day!  Low in fat, high in protein and less than 350 calories a pot, they make a healthy snack or a perfect lunch.  Found in the chilled meals aisle they are microwavable in 4 minutes giving a piping hot, delicious and filling meal.

Fresh vegetables, grains, sauce and spices!

In true Innocent style, the packaging has so much attention to detail with fun ideas for re-using your plastic pot to Veg Art to entertain you while you wait for your Veg Pot to cook.  I love Innocent's sense of humour and their company ethos.

Excitingly, to all us vegetarians out there, the entire range of Innocent Veg Pots have been given the Vegetarian Society's stamp of approval and now wear the 'Vegetarian Society Approved' badge with pride!  We can be completely confident that they have been manufactured to the highest standards!

I enjoyed all six varieties and was impressed with the depth of flavour.  The blend of spices was just right, giving a nice warming flavour to the pots.  They taste like real food...not processed!  I was impressed with the authentic ingredients and enjoyed the mix of vegetables, wholegrains and pulses in each variety.

My husband definitely fancies the idea of taking them to work to microwave for his lunch as a healthier, more interesting change to his usual cheese sandwich!  They have definitely got the Inside the Wendy House seal of approval!!

Bath Time Fun with Boots

Freddy absolutely hated bath time up until a few months ago.  They used to be a battle, but now they are a source of fun!  He splashes in the water, getting covered with the warm, bubbly water.  It is so important that the products we use are suitable for our little ones.  We've enjoyed trying out a lot of different bath products and tonight it was the turn of Boots Baby Sensitive Range.

Developed in consultation with a leading dermatologist, it is the mildest, gentlest product for baby's skin.  They leave skin feeling soft and smooth and stop irritation before bed time.  They are 100% colour free, fragrance free, hypo-allergenic and dermatologically tested.  They are mild enough to use from birth and are suitable for sensitive skin.

Boots sent us the Sensitive Moisturising Bath, priced at £1.99 for 400ml.  It provides gentle and caring cleaning.  When added to water it gave dense, small bubbles giving a creamy consistency to the bath.  It was fragrance free so left no perfume on Freddy's skin.  He splashed everywhere but didn't mind it going in his face and eyes.  His skin felt soft and he smelt fresh and clean.

Our daughter suffers from eczema and has flare-ups on her arms and legs.  She bathed in the Boots Sensitive Moisturising bath and it did not inflame her skin at all.  This is a real plus for us because she loves to relax in the tub, but it is difficult to find completely fragrance and colour free products that give bubbles but do not aggravate her.

Boots also sent us the Moisturising Baby Lotion and Baby Oil in this range.  They are perfect for moisturising baby's delicate skin.  Again these products are also good for Kizzy's sensitive skin.  And at £1.99 are a really cost effective option.  Also available is a Head to Toe Moisturising Wash and a Conditioning Shampoo. This is an excellent range at a really affordable price.  Worth checking out if you have an eczema sufferer in the family!

The Boots Fun Animal Sponge is a man made sponge that is specially made to be ultra soft.  We were sent a super cute blue elephant to try.  It has a really squidgy, soft texture and feels gentle as it glides across the skin.  It goes hard when dry, then softens up again in water.  At £2, it is a good cheaper alternative to natural sponge.

Boots also stock a fun range of Corine de Farme Disney Winnie the Pooh products that are ultra sensitive and created to be soft, soothing and safe from birth.  They leave skin soft and moisturised.   Each product has a cute picture of Winnie the Pooh with his Hundred Acre Wood pals on, which is sure to delight little ones!  Priced at £2.69 they are exclusive to Boots.

It's no surprise that Boots have been voted the UK's Top Family Brand, with their wide range of products to help parents at every step of their journey with their babies and children.  With a huge range of products especially for bath times, Boots make bathing baby safe and fun!  Check out the website for current special offers on toiletries.

Playing with PlayMais!

When we were offered a bucket of PlayMais to review, Tiny Tester Kizzy couldn't wait to get her hands on it!  She loves arts and crafts!  Usually, this equates to her ending up to her neck in glue, cardboard, sellotape, loo roll tubes, paints, tissue paper and felt tips, but having no real direction as to what to make. She tries to replicate what she sees Mister Maker knock up, but it never really works and we end up with some soggy lump of sticky goo which we admire for a couple of days before making a gift of it to the bin men!

When the big bucket of PlayMais arrived I was impressed to find out that it was 100% bio-degradable, completely harmless, made from non-modified maize and coloured with non-toxic food dyes. So it is safe for both my children and the planet!  The pieces stick together with water so you need no glue or sticky tape to make a model. The pack contained 500 pieces along with an absorbent cloth and a bio-degradable modelling tool.  The pieces can be easily cut, rolled or torn into shapes before sticking together with a tiny drop of water.  The natural starch content of the maize makes a glue when it comes into contact with water on the moist cloth.

We made the decision not to let Freddy lose with the PlayMais today.  Although I'm sure he would have loved to have played with it, he also would have thrown it, eaten it and generally smooshed it up.  I know it would be harmless, and that the dyes are washable from clothing at 30 degrees, but I thought Kizzy would have much more fun playing without her toddler brother interfering!   So while he enjoyed a film with his Daddy, me and Kizzy got stuck into the PlayMais.

Kizzy loved the colourful bricks and thought they "looked, felt and smelt like Wotsits!"  She quickly got to grips with cutting pieces to size and using just a touch of water from the damp cloth to stick them together.

The instruction leaflet had lots of ideas for different things to make and she diligently cut and stuck to make a range of animals, people, plants and bugs.  The pieces are easy to manipulate into whatever shape you can imagine.

It was so simple to make things without worrying about glueing or waiting for it to dry. The pieces stuck together instantly which meant Kizzy could create whatever she liked quickly and simply, which was very satisfying for her.  She let her imagination run wild and created her own little world of PlayMais characters.  PlayMais can be as simple or complex as you want it to be.  At 8, Kizzy was able to mould the pieces to create what she wanted to make.  It gave her a real sense of accomplishment (unlike when trying to emulate Mister Maker and his unachievable 30 second makes!!)

Here is a video of her demonstrating how to make a PlayMais person and showing some of her finished models!
She really did love it and it was nice to be able to compost the offcuts knowing they are completely bio-degradable.  We had no trouble with running dye as she was old enough to understand about not using too much water.  There was no mess on her hands, clothes or the table after we had finished playing.  As far as I am concerned, it is an excellent arts and crafts product...it was not too messy, it was quick and easy, it didn't frustrate her because it did exactly what she wanted it to do and the waste can be disposed off into the compost bin. The bucket keeps it all contained and stores it away nicely. It's eco-friendly, green, versatile and a lot of fun!

She made a little film using some of the characters we made.  It really fired her imagination!

PlayMais originates from Germany where it is an award winning favourite.  It is now taking the UK by storm. It is available from John Lewis, Amazon and from good toy shops.  Prices start at just £2.99 for a small themed kit.  It is recommended for ages 3 and up, but really does become as complex as your child's needs.
I give it a big thumbs up...I really can't fault it!

We Love Our Pre Shoes!

Pre-Shoes xxx
Freddy has become the proud owner of a gorgeous pair of 'Young Farmers' Baby Shoes courtesy of  Pre Shoes.  We were sent these beautiful little booties to review, and I can honestly say it was love at first sight for Freddy when he saw the fun tractor design and vibrant colours!

They arrived presented in a transparent zip up bag with a neat carry handle.  The design was brilliant with a tractor on one foot and a trailer on the other.  I was ohhing and ahhing from the moment they arrived.  Not only is the design unique and quirky, it also means I'll never get the left and right shoes mixed up (a real plus for the spatially challenged among us!!)

Freddy really has taken a shine to his Pre Shoes.  At 18 months old, he is a great little walker but his outdoor shoes are quite clompy and restrictive for wearing all day long.  These soft soled leather shoes are so easy to wear and comfortable, that Freddy loves wearing them.  For running, crawling, playing and climbing, these Pre Shoes are proving an excellent choice!

They are made of soft, top quality leather that allows baby's feet to breathe, keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer.  The anti-slip suede sole is perfect for when learning to walk or toddling...and is especially good on laminate floors.  They are durable and flexible allowing baby's little feet to move and tiny toes to grip, giving unrestricted movement, perfect for play time!  The elasticated comfort band keeps the shoes snugly in place without the need for annoyingly fiddly laces or buckles.

They fit Freddy really well and are generously sized.  They are available in four sizes from newborn up to 24 months.  They would make a perfect gift idea for birthdays, christenings or for a new arrival.  The range has so many fun and funky designs for both boys and girls in a whole spectrum of colours, there really is something for everyone.

The Pre Shoes can be worn inside or out.  I've found them invaluable for travelling in the car or the buggy because they are so light and comfortable on Freddy's feet.  They are excellent for playing indoors as I don't worry about him clambouring on the furniture (in true boyish style) as they are soft and have no buckles to catch or snag the sofa (or himself!)  Freddy has tested his shoes hard and they still look great.  The sole is fairing up excellently to his abuse and the stitching is still perfectly intact.  They are very well made, excellent quality and creatively designed shoes.

My only wish is that I'd discovered them sooner.  I love them!  Freddy loves them!  People comment on them because they look so cool!  I highly and wholeheartedly recommend Pre Shoes.  This video shows Freddy having some boisterous fun whilst wearing his Pre Shoes.

The shoes that Freddy was sent to review are Pre Shoes Young Farmer Baby Shoes priced at £15.99 and available to purchase online at Pre Shoes.

*Pre Shoes work closely with the Leather Centre to ensure the highest quality of standards.  The leather is tested and awarded the Leathersure Mark.  Although I am a vegetarian, I use leather products because I think that leather is often the best material for the job.*

A Healthier Chocolate Fix with Mighty Mix Cookies!

It's nearly Easter and the shops have been displaying hundreds of chocolatey treats for weeks.  It can be hard to resist the temptation, but there is another way to achieve a chocolate fix with a healthier twist!  Linwoods have an alternative where you can enjoy an Easter treat without the guilt.  Linwoods Milled Flaxseed, Cocoa, Strawberries and Blueberries give you the all the flavour of quality cocoa whilst giving you a health and energy boost at the same time.

Natural Cocoa powder which is used in the mix is high in Flavanols , which help maintain a healthy heart and circulation.   Just two spoonfuls of this tasty mix contains the same antioxidants as 3 portions of broccoli, a cabbage, 6 carrots, 10 tomatoes, 2 apples and a grapefruit!

It also has 75% reduced fat when compared to other cocoa in most dark chocolate products.
This Superfood Mix also contains Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, Selenium and Omega 3.  This chocolate fix will add valuable nutrition to your diet.

We've been sent a packet of Linwoods Milled Flaxseed, Cocoa, Strawberries and Blueberries along with a recipe to make  "Chocolate Mighty Mix Cookies"!

So with the help of my Tiny Testers, we have put Linwoods to the test.  Is it possible to make a  chocolatey treat that is really good for you?!

  • 125g Linwoods Milled Organic Flaxseed, Cocoa and Berries
  • 100g Margarine  or Butter
  • 60g Oats
  • 70g Self Raising Flour
  • 45g Sugar
  • 5ml Vanilla Flavouring

The cookies really do taste healthy.  They are wholesome,  oaty, earthy, seedy and have an intense chocolatey taste.  They were very moreish but not very sweet.  The girls happily chomped through them (but said they would have liked a bit more sugar in them).

If you are looking for a really healthy ingredient to add nutritional value to your diet, Linwoods is definitely the answer.   I will definitely experiment by using it in other recipes.  The list of health benefits listed on the pack is impressive.  Just adding two dessert spoonfuls of the mix to your meals in a day will provide all the benefits of this superfood.  Sprinkle over cereals, put it in smoothies or in homemade bread, add to yogurt, use in stuffing or nut roasts, sprinkle over cooked vegetables or use in desserts, cakes or biscuits.  There are nine different products in the range so you're sure to find one you love!

Available from independent health food stores, Holland & Barrett, Julian Graves, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and pharmacies across the UK and retail at approximately £8.00 per pack and range from 49p to 99p for a mini pack.

If you would like to start feeling the benefits from Linwoods Superfoods, register free for the 10 Day Healthy Superfoods Challenge via the Facebook page and receive a 10 Day Variety Pack!

Farty Sounds are Funny

I just had to share this video of Freddy demonstrating the new sound effect he has learned.  Blowing raspberries is something this boy just can't get enough of.  Anytime, anywhere.  This morning we filmed him at it.  I hope you enjoy his talent as much as I do.

Jackson Reece Unscented Baby Wipes...Kinder by Nature x

Back in December, I reviewed Jackson Reece's Baby Wipes and was impressed by their greener, safer credentials and their price tag, which was the same as other premium brands.  You don't have to pay the earth to help save it!

I've now been sent a pack of their Unscented Wipes to try out.  They are pure and simple made using high purity water.   With the same impressive specifications as the original wipes, they are:

  • 100% bio-degradable, compostable and chlorine free
  • Have recyclable packaging
  • 99.9% of the ingredients are plant derived
  • Unique vegetable based preservative system
  • Dermatologically approved
  • pH balanced
  • Not tested on animals
  • Do not contain any potential irritants...No parabens, no alcohol, no SLS.
  • Made in UK
Unlike the original pack I tested, they are completely fragrance free.  The unscented formula smells exactly the same as if you'd used water.  It's fresh but scentless leaving no lingering smell on baby's skin.  I actually thought I'd not like fragrance free wipes as much as scented ones, but these were lovely to use and left Freddy smelling clean but not perfumed!

They are a good size and lovely and thick and do the job brilliantly.  They are definitely a top quality wipe!

The packaging now incorporates a new strong plastic rigid label for keeping the wipes moist.  I think that it's a really clever design feature.  It isn't made of raised plastic like on some wipes, it is flush with the packaging so you can stack your packs in storage neatly. Thoughtful and practical!  It is still working well half way down the pack and hasn't lost its stick.

Jackson Reece Unscented Baby Wipes are perfect for any messy clean up jobs.  Bottoms, hands and faces are all cleansed thoroughly and gently...they even cope with moments like this!

Jackson Reece's Award winning range of wipes are available to buy online and in the baby aisle of leading retailers.  Click here for stockists.

Flashback Friday...School Memories

I've spent a lot of time this week thinking about my school years since hearing of the tragic sudden death of an old school friend. I went to Herschel High School, a grammar school in Slough.  It wasn't all bad!  I found the work easy and coasted through the exams.  I wasn't in the popular crowd but I had some very good friends.  My very best school friend Lianne,on the right in this picture, is someone I don't see anywhere near enough.  We stay in touch but aren't very good at it.  She still lives down south whereas I'm now a relative Northerner (north of Watford at least!)  She juggles motherhood of two little ones, with being a high flying professional. I've been a SAHM on and off since I was 19!  Our paths diverged but she will always be my best friend.  We went through a lot together (well, I put her through a lot to be honest...she was a saint!)  I spent more time at her house than I did at my own.  I dedicate this post to my very best friend and vow to try to do better.  She has just had a baby boy that I've never seen.  She has yet to meet Freddy who was born in 2009.  Real life gets in the way.  But knowing how fragile life can be, being busy or the distance between us shouldn't be a stumbling block to friendship.

This picture was taken on the last day of term in the 5th form in 1985.  I'm the one with her legs on the table...not sure why??  Cute boots though!  I clearly favoured the rebellious skinny tied look!  I have some great memories of us lot together at school.  We had a laugh with the boys and have some good memories!

Self-Harm...My Dark Secret

When I was younger, I really battled with my mental health.  Things weren't as open back then, it seemed much more of a dirty secret that had to be hidden.  It was not something I could discuss with my family, it was a taboo subject.  Admitting to harbouring an innate unhappiness was like saying I'm not grateful for what I have.  I held my feelings inside, internalizing my torment and feeling guilty and embarrassed for having this dark passenger that dictated how  I would feel or behave.

Some of my earliest memories involve a self-loathing and a desire to be punished.  I'd hold my face in a sinkful of cold water until my breath burnt my lungs.  I'd shut myself in my wardrobe in the dark.  I'd hit my legs with my shoes.  I'd bang my knees together causing huge bruises on the inside of my legs.  These things were just normal behaviour to me, it's what I did to feel right.

I was 14 when I first cut myself.  I had a Saturday job in a baker's and was washing up, feeling miserable because I felt persecuted by my new boss.  I broke a glass and instinctively drew the jagged edge across the skin on my arm.  I only cut lightly and was fascinated at how the tiny droplets of blood would seep up to the surface across the gash. I felt a release, a sense of control over what I felt.  It became addictive.  If I felt low I'd cut.

I used to carry a small pen knife in my handbag to satisfy my urge to cut.  I'd make little slices into my forearms, my inner arms and my thighs.  I did it in places that I could keep hidden.  Mostly the cuts were little more than a succession of quickly executed scratches, but others would be deeper and draw the deep red blood that would drip down my skin.  It excited me and I felt empowered.  Afterwards I felt humiliated and ashamed.

I didn't have a lot of self worth.  Looking back I want to shake myself and shout at myself.  I was tall, slim, attractive, really clever and had the whole world at my feet.  Why I chose a self-destructive path was a deep seated problem that I had no control over.  I hang out at a local pub, befriending a group of guys.  They were the sort of lads I'd warn my own children against having any association with.  I was dragged into the lifestyle finding a self-destructive path through my teens that only served to erode my self-worth further.  In my mind I screamed out for something more.  I wanted acceptance and love.

When I was 17 I met someone.  He showed me the respect and care I had craved and I was quickly seduced by the notion of being in love. I threw myself into a relationship pouring all my needs onto a poor unsuspecting boy who was ill equipped to deal with me.  To me, this relationship was my answer to my problems, re-inventing myself as a new me...part of a couple.  I felt validated and defined by this tenuous connection I had made with another human being.  I gave up my place at University and moved in with his family. Unfortunately and inevitably it was doomed to failure from the onset.  My depression reached a whole new low.  I started to cut worse than ever...going on to razor blades for a sharper, deeper cut.  I'd tie belts around my neck and pull until my restricted oxygen flow made my head explode with a bright, white light. I'd give myself cigarette burns on my arms. I'd bite and scratch myself. I'd fantasise about terrible, violent things believing they would happen unless I counted to a certain number before the next car drove past me...or some other random, obsessive behaviour.  I was erratic flitting between euphoric bouts of exuberance and sitting in a corner rocking.  My health suffered too.  I was tested for all manner of ailments from glandular fever to thyroid problems.  Nothing was diagnosed.  I kept my darkness hidden from my doctor.

Eventually, the pressure of living with me became too great.  When we reached the apex of our tumultuousness and we split up, I tried to slit my wrists.  Thankfully, I did this is an overtly dramatic manner in front of him, and he physically wrestled me as I hacked at my arm.  The cuts were deep enough to see the layers of flesh and fat beneath the skin.  I remember thinking it looked a bit like sausagemeat.  I went to hospital and made such a scene, bleeding and screaming about my boyfriend wanting to leave me that I was seen straight away.  I am retrospectively embarrassed by my behaviour.

I was put under my doctor after this but although I was on a waiting list for psychiatric help I never went.  I found out shortly afterwards that I was 10 weeks pregnant.  A switch inside my head was thrown.  My doctor said it was the first time I'd looked at her in the eye.  She felt I deserved a chance to have my baby without the stigma of having had treatment for mental health problems.  Thankfully she was right.

I felt such shame having my blood pressure taken. I said my scars came from putting my hand through a window...I don't think the midwife believed me but she didn't pursue her line of questioning.  Even today, I feel the same shame having my BP done.  The thin white lines up my inner arm are mostly faded, only visible if I get a tan, but the three thick white scars on the sides of my wrist are a constant reminder of my darkest times.

Having my son, as a 19 year old single parent, made me. It gave me strength, self worth and purpose.  Things I'd been lacking.  Although I'm not completely free of my depression, I recognise it when the cloud begins to descend.  I see it for what it is...it's nobody's fault, nothing causes it...it just is.  I differentiate between feeling a bit fed up and feeling dark. It has taken me a long time to understand myself.  I'm blessed with an understanding husband who doesn't hide behind his own self pity if things get bad.

I've not self-harmed since Joe was born.  I was lucky to have found my path through the minefield in which I walked.  Some are not so lucky.

If self harm affects you or you suspect that it is affecting someone else, there is help available.  Check out this website http://www.selfharm.co.uk/home for information, support and a safe place to express feelings.  With the stigma and the veil of secrecy lifted, the guilt, shame and feeing of being judged will be too.

An Unexpected Gift from a Comment

I'm sure by now, everyone has heard the urban legend of the "Fairy Hob Mother", the mysterious visitor of blogs who reads the comments we leave and who surprises random bloggers with a surprise gift!  Like a modern day virtual Santa, Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny rolled into one!  I was over the moon to be visited by the lovely, hilariously funny Ian from Appliances Online, who wanted to send me a present!  I'd made a comment on Two Become Four's Reasons to be Cheerful post.  Ian saw my comment and then visited my blog and read about my love of horror films and decided that this would be an ideal book for Inside the Wendy House!
What a fantastic choice and 100% totally right up our 'Nightmare on Elm Street'!!  The forward by Wes Craven has me wanting to read the whole book in one sitting.  Packed with tips and advice, I know I'll be a Zombie Holocaust Survivor when the inevitable happens!

I was thrilled to become a part of this phenomena and totally impressed that a company can take such a keen and caring interest in our blogs and the people behind them!  The lovely folk at Appliances Online are obviously enjoying every moment of this, and are choosing such thoughtful presents for everyone.  It gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside :)

If you are ever in the market for new white goods for your home, check out their website.  They have put the customer at the heart of their business, offering free advice, a price match promise, free delivery, 10 day returns guarantee and a connection and recycling service.  They didn't ask me to say any of this by the way...but it sounded too good not to give them a plug!!

If you'd like the chance of maybe becoming the next blogger chosen to receive a special treat leave a comment on this post.  It makes my day when I receive comments on my posts, so not only will it make me happy, it might also make you very happy if you get chosen next!

You never know who might be watching! XXX

World Book Day...Geek Love

I couldn't let today go uncelebrated on my blog.  So here is an adult book recommendation which ties in terrifyingly well to my entry to Tuesday's Movie Meme .

My favourite book that I have read in recent years has to be Katherine Dunn's Geek Love.  Set in a travelling carnival, Al and his wife Crystal devise an idea to breed their own sideshow oddities using various drugs, poisons and radioactivity to alter the genes of their offspring during Crystal's pregnancies.  The results are Arty the Flipper Boy, Siamese Twins Elly and Iphy, Oly a hunchbacked albino dwarf and Chick born with telekenetic powers.  The children who do not survive are preserved in jars for the public to view.

Oly tells the story of her family and her own life. She recounts her childhood struggles in the circus, where her own deformity wasn't great enough for her to be a star which meant she was forced into menial labour, and her dealing with the Machiavellian Arty who set up his own cult, Arturism, where followers were urged to amputate limbs in an attempt to discover Peace, Isolation and Purity through self-mutilation.  His battle for control over his siblings and his followers was brutal.  He would stop at nothing.

The story of Oly's current life tells of her relationship with Miranda, her daughter (a beautiful striper with a tail that she flaunts at a fetish club) who is unaware of who her parents are.  (Oly's brother Arty is the father, conceived via the telekenetic transportation of his sperm to her egg!)  Oly spies on her daughter and will do anything to protect her.  Her protectiveness reaches a head when Miranda meets Mary Lick, a rich woman who pays attractive women to have disfiguring operations in order for them to achieve their full potential rather than be considered sex objects.  Lick's real motivation is not so honourable and Oly must stop her!

This book is gross, revolting, tragic, shocking and bizarre.  However it is also extraordinarily moving.  Oly's desire for normalcy in her abnormal world is heartbreaking.  It opens our eyes to the struggles and desires present in all of us.  Human experiences transcend physicality.  Oly yearns for love, family, acceptance and protection in an unaccepting world and with an unappreciative family that focuses its attention on her manipulative brother.

This book is emotionally draining but also riveting in its ability to make us care deeply for the central character.  The back story is dark but compelling.  The central theme is the traditional familial desires of Oly in a totally untraditional family.  We can relate to her desires and identify with her struggles although her turmoil is magnified.  We are moved by her.  This is an amazing book and well worth checking out.

Reasons to be Cheerful...Week 8

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy From the Heart

This week has been a mixed bag of emotions.  From hearing about my old school friend who tragically died to having a wonderful family party for my sister's wedding anniversary, this week has been a real rollercoaster.  I have felt really reflective this week and maybe even more thankful for the small pleasures in life.

1:  Having my children home.  All 5 of the McD brood were together again at the weekend.  Nothing makes me happier than having my children all under one roof even though it's crazy, loud and manic.  The nicest thing was seeing Freddy's bond with his older brother and sister.  They were so worried when Fred was born that he wouldn't know them as they no longer live at home.  Hearing him shout "Joe" as he trotted along behind his big brother was heartwarming.  Watching him cuddle up to Megan and giggle with her was wonderful.  He knows his family!

2:  How I Met Your Mother.  We all watched the episode of HIMYM which guest starred Hurley from Lost as "The Blitz".  We sat together laughing and quoting catchphrases and generally having a fantastic family time. I so appreciate that my kids want to have a laugh with us, their parents.  I'm so glad that we have similar senses of humour and similar tastes in TV and music and that we can enjoy each others' company.  I couldn't bear it if the generation gap had alienated us from them.  Having a close knit family is the singularly most important thing to me.  I love being their mother.

3:  Memories.  Whatever happens, whatever life throws at us, the one thing that can't be taken away from us is our memories.  (OK...not strictly true we could get amnesia, but you know what I mean.)  I've been doing a lot of remembering this week.  Remembering being at school, remembering my friend who was such a character, remembering the good times and reflecting on past friendships.  There are so many people who have made a difference to my life.  I'm thankful for each and everyone of them.
Miss you Pete x
