Ella's Prom Night #Project 52

Friday night was Ella's Prom, celebrating the end of her GCSEs and of secondary school life.  She chose an understated but elegant Little Black Dress to wear and looked stunning.

prom, LBD

Before Prom started, Ella's friends all descended on our house.  There were shoes, bow ties and jackets strewn around as her friends got changed into their outfits.  The atmosphere was so upbeat.  I was honoured to be a part of their preparations in my role as unofficial pre-prom photographer.

teenagers, fun, prom

Her friend Jeff bought her a beautiful corsage to wear on her wrist, a gorgeous hairpiece and a cuddly toy.  She was thoroughly spoiled and treated (quite deservedly) like a princess.

Ella, prom, corsage

I love how down to earth her friends are.  They all looked gorgeous and scrubbed up well, but didn't go down the OTT route.  Proms are becoming so huge in the UK with kids arriving in stretch limos, wedding cars or by horse and carriage.  Some of the dresses worn would rival those worn by brides on their big day.  I wonder what Prom will be like when Kizzy and Freddy are sixteen?!

corsage, prom

Ella's friends are truly a lovely bunch of teenagers.  They look out for each other, are supportive, friendly and loyal.  I am so proud of her for choosing to be part of such a great friendship group.  They have helped her through some tough times.

Come September, Ella will be going to a new college in another town, but will always have her hometown friends.

Prom, teens, friends

It was lovely seeing Ella and her friends so happy and having such fun as they waited for us parents/chaffeurs to take them in convoy to the school where the hall had been transformed  into a perfect prom venue with flowers and balloons. Thankfully the torrential rain subsided and the sun shone down on them as they arrived making it all perfect.

Everyone had a fantastic time.  This is such a milestone in my daughter's life.  I am so proud of her and absolutely adore my sweet sixteen year old.

Soreen - Deliciously Squidgy Energy

Soreen Malt Loaves, Toasties, Lunchbox Loaves and Snackers

malt loaf, banana loaf

We have recently been sent a hamper of Soreen products to test out.  This has made my husband Ian and my daughter Kizzy really happy because they are big fans of Soreen!  They love chomping through a malt loaf between them.  I have never indulged because I don't like eating dried fruit and Malt Loaf is cram packed full of raisins!

Receiving a Soreen Banana Loaf meant that I would at last get to sample the squidgy goodness for myself!  When I tried it I understood why it is described as 'squidgy'!  It is dense, sticky and very fruity.  We were all very impressed with the Toastie Loaf that had pre-cut slices so Kizzy could help herself to a snack (cutting Malt Loaf is a bit of an art to avoid squashing it flat with the knife!)  The individually packed lunchbox loaves and Snackers mean that Kizzy can have Soreen in her lunchbox, which makes her extremely happy!

Here are all the details of the Soreen goodies:

Olympic Waste Busting Challenge

This Summer's Olympic Games are nearly upon us. Coca-Cola is working with the Olympic Committee to help reduce the waste generated and have some impressive initiatives to make our Olympics more sustainable.  That is such good news and something to feel really proud about!

My family and I do our very best to be as environmentally friendly as we possibly can...in fact, one could say we are as green as Usain Bolt's Olympic shorts!  It just makes sense to adopt a waste-busting approach to life, after all this is our planet and our legacy to future generations. We owe it to ourselves to minimize our impact and encourage long term sustainability.

As a family we do all the usual...Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.  We compost our green waste.  We do our best to make smart choices when we make purchases to minimize our waste.  We really do try to go for gold in our mission to be green!  It's about being resourceful, mindful and a little inventive...and there is a lot of fun to be had along the way!

My most recently implemented change has been to overhaul my housework!   When I am in a supermarket I am blown away by the hundreds and hundreds of household chemical cleaners that are lined up on the shelves.  The plastic moulded trigger spray caps, the disposable plastic gloves and the plethora of chemically impregnated wipes are all destined for landfill.  Not to mention the fact that the toxic ingredients are destined to go down the drain to add to the pollution that is suffocating our planet.  To counteract my contribution to this industry I have switched to using pure malt vinegar solution as a general purpose cleaner for glass, surfaces, paintwork, mirrors, sinks, floors, toilets and taps.  It is a disinfectant and a deodorizer and once dry leaves no smell or residue.  The vinegar comes in a recyclable glass bottle and a little goes a really long way making it a more cost effective, natural way to clean my home without resorting to buying dozens of plastic bottled cleaners, each designed for a specific task.  I use a refillable squirty bottle into which I make up a solution of 30/70 vinegar to water solution.   Do we really need a separate cleaner for the kitchen sink, another for the tiles, another for the laminate, one for the windows and one for bath etc??  Each  one generating its own waste.  I also use washable and reusable cloths that are guaranteed for 300 washes and will be good for ages  It's been an easy change to make and one that makes a real difference.  What's more, my toddler can help with my cleaning safe in the knowledge that he will not come into contact with toxic chemicals...so I now have a little helper!

Green Cleaning with a Little Helping Hand!
Another commitment we have made as a family is to donate regularly to charity shops or pass on things to family and friends so they can be re-used.  Just because my 3 year old son Freddy has grown out of a toy or a pair of trousers does not mean that the item should be binned.  Another child could benefit from it.  If there is no obvious hand-me-down route, then we give it to a charity shop which finds a home for the said item and raises valuable funds for charity.  It also feels good to know you are helping someone else!   My eldest son and his girlfriend are about to have their first baby and it feels so nice to relocate all of Freddy's baby equipment to his future nephew or niece.  Passing on things to other people and seeing them get a new lease of life is my favourite form of re-use!  Everyone benefits.  I like my children to be involved with donating things to charity or passing them on to others so they can see the value of giving away things you no longer need rather than consigning them to landfill.  We organised a Teddy Adoption day at the school where children brought in cuddly toys they no longer wanted to be relocated to a new loving home.   Making kids appreciative of reducing waste and re-using things that are no longer wanted, is like passing on the baton to the next generation!

When it comes to the kitchen and cooking, I hate waste!  The idea of throwing away food really upsets me as it is so unnecessary.  I regularly do stock takes of my kitchen shelves to plan out vegetarian meals and tailor my shopping lists so I don't over-buy.  When I do end up with a lot of perishable food about to go off I get inventive!  One of my inventions is veggie Shepherd's Pie With A Twist, which the kids all love.  Using up all the veggies in the fridge and pulses in my cupboards I make a red lentil or Quorn and veggie base which is topped with mash (adding any spare root veggies if they need using up!)  Each version is unrepeatable but equally enjoyed!  Making stews, casseroles or soups using up veggies, and freezing them is another way of ensuring nothing is wasted.  Some of my vegetable trimmings go to give our hamster a treat and the rest gets composted.  The only rubbish from this that I don't know what to do with is the plastic packaging on bags of Quorn.  I'll need to get my thinking cap on for a way to re-use them...perhaps I could punch holes in them and then use them to plant up seedlings in the garden??  Growing your own is a fun green activity that the children love!

A Veggie Use-Up Concoction

I believe that if we all do our bit then we can make positive changes.  It's not that difficult to implement one way of busting waste.  Simply by recycling our glass, cans, foil and paper we are making a difference.  Re-using boxes, jiffy bags and envelopes makes a difference.  Composting garden waste and food waste makes a difference.  Buying fruit and veg loose rather than pre-packed makes a difference.  Offering things you no longer need to friends or taking them to charity shops makes a difference.  Using re-usable shopping bags in the supermarket makes a difference.  Avoiding the disposable options of products in shops, and buying something that will last, instead of getting binned after one use, makes a difference. Getting the kids involved with simple ideas such as using both sides of paper when drawing, recycling or donating old toys and games teaches them all about being a waste buster!  These things are all so easy to do and their impact should never be underestimated.  Imagine what a difference we could make if we all work together as a team!

It isn't an Olympic feat to do your bit.  We can all flex our waste-busting muscles and go for gold in the race to become a zero waste nation.  This challenge is like a marathon, not a sprint, so even if you start slow, you can up your pace as the momentum takes hold.  If we all go for a recycling, re-using and reducing personal best this summer, then we will all be winners!!

This is my entry into the Coca-Cola Olympic Games Sustainability Challenge!

LEGO® Batman™ 2: DC Super Heroes

Our Review Of Lego Batman 2 For The XBox 360

Lego, XBox, Batman

Batman and Robin return in LEGO® Batman™ 2: DC Super Heroes, the highly-anticipated sequel to the best-selling LEGO® videogame of all time, which to date has sold more than 11 million units worldwide.  This time the Dynamic Duo join forces with other famous DC super heroes including Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern to stop the notorious villains Lex Luthor and The Joker from destroying Gotham City.   Batman fans of all ages will enjoy a new and original story filled with classic LEGO videogame action and humour as players fight to put the bad guys back behind bars.

XBox, The Joker, Batman

We were sent a copy of Lego Batman 2 for the XBox 360 to try out.  I was particularly excited about this as I had had a sneak peek of the game at the Warner Bros Blogger Event earlier in the year where it was demonstrated on a cinema sized screen.
The most exciting development in this title is that for the first time the characters can speak, allowing for plot progression using dialogue.  Favourite characters are beautifully portrayed in Lego form and you can get to play as some other iconic comic heroes such as Superman, who can even fly!
A whole host of vehicles such as the Batmobile and Batwing can be used in the game, and new suits and gadgets allow the characters to solve certain tasks along the way.  There are super powers to be discovered such as Superman's heat vision and superbreath, making this the most exciting Lego game to date!
Gameplay is solo or co-op which allows for some real family fun as players adopt the roles of the Dynamic Duo et al!  An amazing Gotham City hub can be fully explored which is absolutely breathtaking.  It includes all the famous landmarks such as Wayne Manor. You can the city and interact with the landscape collecting items and discovering mini-games.  Once you complete the game, free-play is unlocked and you can even get to fly over the city as Superman, which I witnessed at the Warner Bros. event.  The addition of the John Williams' Superman theme tune is nothing short of pure genius.
Ian and the kids have been playing Lego Batman 2 and are enjoying the challenge of solving puzzles and completing levels.  The co-op experience is always an enjoyable aspect of the Lego games which my family loves.  The game leads you through the levels quite nicely giving hints along the way making it great for novice gamers and younger players alike.  The use of the suits is an interesting way of solving certain problems.  Robin's Acrobat Suit helps him climb to inaccessible areas and the Invisibility Suit helps Batman to sneak past the security systems.

XBox, Lego, Batman

This game is pure entertainment.  Beautifully made with superb graphics, this game is a joy.  The soundtrack is very movie-like and the voice talents add an extra element of fun.  My family adored the Lego characters, The Joker being our favourite!  The familiar Lego gameplay of building things and bashing things and collecting things remains the same and is fondly carried out.  The humour is simply brilliant and includes a great deal of slapstick that the little ones giggled at.
There is so much to do in Lego Batman 2.  For instance there are 250 gold bricks to find (we have about 3!!)  Characters and items can be unlocked and levels replayed extending the longevity of this title. It really is fun for everyone, and equally fun to sit and watch being played which is a real bonus for those of us who don't get a go on the XBox very often!

Rug Doctor Review

My son and his girlfriend have just moved house.  We helped them on Sunday with the big clean up to make everything look spick and span, and part of this job was to clean the beige coloured carpets.  Professional carpet cleaning can cost a lot of money, and for young couples the last thing they want to do is fork out cash unnecessarily.  It made sense to hire a Rug Doctor to deep clean their carpets for a fraction of the price.

Wherever you live in the UK, you are probably within a 10 minute car drive from a rental outlet.  Many supermarkets, cleaners and DIY stores are outlets from which you can hire a Rug Doctor.

A 24 hour rental complete with a bottle of cleaning detergent costs just over £30.  This will clean approximately 38 sq m of carpet (about two rooms).

rug doctor, review, carpet cleaning

The machine fitted easily into my son's car on the rear seat.  It was in a good and clean condition and ready to use straight away.

The instructions to get the machine ready for use were easy to follow and within minutes the cleaner was filled with warm water and cleaning detergent in the tanks.

The Rug Doctor injects cleaning solution into the pile of the carpet and sucks it back up picking up all the dirt, grime and nasties lurking deep down.  A vibrating brush agitates the carpet loosening tough dirt and fluffing up the pile.  80% of the cleaning solution is extracted by the machine leaving carpets dry in just a couple of hours.

carpet cleaning, Rug Doctor

Using the Rug Doctor is much like using a very heavy vacuum cleaner that you pull backwards.  Unfortunately, the instructions on the machine were a bit vague and consequently he didn't manage to use the attachments, but we did get it all working.  My daughter, who was helping her brother, found it quite hard to use as she struggled to pull the machine backwards due to its weight and ended up with a painful wrist.  However, my son didn't have a problem using it.  The amount of solution going onto the carpet seemed a bit inconsistent leaving some patches much damper than others, but that could have been user error.  Overall though, the Rug Doctor worked efficiently and the carpet was cleaned quickly.

Review

I was impressed with the end result.  Although it was not 100% perfect, the carpet was much cleaner and the water in the tank was filthy, so we know that a lot of dirt and grime was lifted from the pile.  It definitely provided a new lease of life to the carpet.  As you can see from the Before and After photos below, most of the stains were considerably lightened or removed by the solution.  It is shocking to see just how much dirt is trapped inside the fibres of a carpet.

My Green Clean Challenge Round Up

I Went Green With E-Cloth...And I'm Impressed!

Throughout the month of June I have gone greener than I've ever gone before!  Thanks to the lovely people at e-cloth, who provided me with a selection of their cloths and natural cleaning products, I have not had to use any nasty household chemicals in my home at all!  I am so surprised at how easy it has been to say bye-bye to bleach and ta-ta to toilet cleaners.  E-cloth unleashes the ionic cleaning power of water which is perfect for lots of household tasks.  The concentration of special fibres make the cloths able to pick up and hold grease and grime more effectively than other cloths. 480,000 fibres per square cm provide a huge surface area of cleaning edges, picking up germs as well as visible dirt.  Other jobs can be taken over by using environmentally friendly alternatives, whether that is a purpose made cleaner or by using salt, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda or lemon juice.  I've learned tricks and tips to save time, money and the planet.  I have revolutionized my housework!!

cleaning, green

One of the most impressive cleaners that I discovered over the four weeks is vinegar.  It has disinfectant and deodorizing properties so is useful for drains and toilets when used neat.  In a solution, it makes an excellent spray cleaner for most surfaces, windows, mirrors, taps and sinks.  It is as good as anything I've ever used before, and that includes the top brand sprays that claim to clean everything in a single spray.  The best bit though is just how cheap it is.  Economy Malt Vinegar works just as well as the more expensive vinegars and  it costs pennies.  The smell disappears as soon as it is dry.  Using it with the e-cloth makes surfaces smear-free clean with ease.  I can't recommend the General Purpose e-Cloth and the Glass Polishing e-cloth enough when used in conjunction with a light spray of vinegar solution for surfaces and windows.

Oven Cleaning is a horrible job but using the Hob and Oven Pack and a bicarbonate of soda and vinegar paste certainly did the trick.  I found it actually worked better than a top brand chemical oven foam cleaner that I had previously used.  Not only was the end result better, the green way also did not smell for hours or destroy the skin on my hands.  In fact, when my son Joe and his girlfriend Jade moved house last weekend, I used my new found green oven cleaning technique to get their oven clean.  I used environmentally friendly Astonish and the oven cloth to scrub the oven after scraping off the layer of grease with a plastic pan scraper.  Jade had actually bought an expensive chemical oven cleaning kit, but it went unused...I am that much of a convert to going green!  Glass doors on ovens and microwaves polish up a treat with the glass cloth.

microwave, cleaning

Laundry products have been replaced by environmentally friendly versions that are readily available and similarly priced to top selling brands.  They are just as good yet kinder to the planet.  Vinegar can even be used as a fabric softener, although I didn't try this myself.

We have laminate and stone tiled floors in our downstairs rooms.  The e-cloth Deep Clean Mop is excellent for both surfaces using just water.  The large mop head is very absorbent and works quickly and easily to clean hard surfaces.  It breaks down, picks up and holds the dirt and grease which can then be rinsed away. It worked really efficiently and the telescopic handle made it height adjustable to avoid back breaking mopping issues!

green, cleaning, mop

Washing-up is so easy with the Washing-Up Pad which at £2.99 is a real must have.  It is big, thick and has two different textured sides to tackle both grease and dried on food.  It is very robust and after a few weeks shows no sign of deterioration at all.  For lightly soiled washing-up I use just water and the pad.  For greasy dishes I do like to use a squirt of environmentally friendly washing-up liquid.  A dash of lemon juice or a sprinkle of salt in hot water can also be used to assist in washing-up the green way.  The E-Towel is a drying up phenomena, drying four times better than ordinary cotton.  I love how efficient it is to use, no more smearing damp cloths over my plates!  And glassware comes up streak free and sparkling.  It is an excellent addition to my kitchen.

glass ware, e-towel

Overall, going green was not difficult at all.  In fact some jobs were much easier and quicker thanks to the brilliant e-cloth products that are designed for specific cleaning jobs.  I loved the fact that all my cleaning jobs were safer for my household and the planet.  The money saving aspect of not buying in chemical cleaners was a real eye opener.  Every year over £100 is spent per household.  Investing in a selection of e-cloths will prove cost effective over time.  E-cloths outperform and outlast ordinary cloths.

E-Cloths can be kept clean by regular rinsing, but can be washed in a washing machine with a little detergent according to individual washing instructions.  This maintains their performance at its best.  They can be washed 300 times without losing their effectiveness!

Taking the green plunge really is a win-win situation.  Your family is protected from the chemical residues from cleaning products that can trigger asthma, allergies and skin problems.  The planet is saved from the disposal of harmful chemicals.  Not using impregnated wipes and cutting down on shop bought bottled cleaning products reduces the impact on landfill sites.  Money is saved in the long run by using just water to clean.  Your house will be hygienically clean and many tasks will be made quicker and easier.

Whether you want to make one small difference or whether you want to go completely green,  every step you take has benefits that positively impact both personally and globally.  Take a look at the e-cloth website to peruse the purpose designed cloths, mops and pads.  You will also find more information on how e-cloths work and advice on their care and use.  Delivery is free on orders over £10.

New Chocolatey Cheerios!

There is a new flavour of Cheerios hitting the supermarket shelves and we've had a try of them!  New Chocolatey Cheerios are four grain cereal loops flavoured with chocolate in every bite.

chocolate cereals

They are wholegrain, low in fat and contain added vitamins and minerals.

cereal, Cheerios

My children are not big fans of chocolate flavoured cereals served with milk for breakfast.  However, they did enjoy grabbing handfuls of the cereal as a snack and thoroughly enjoyed them that way.  This is definitely a healthier snacking option than a bar of chocolate or a biscuit so I'm happy for them to eat them in this way.  They will be getting Calcium, Iron and wholegrain goodness which is a definite bonus while enjoying a sweet treat.

cereals, chocolate

As with all chocolate flavoured cereals, I think that if they can encourage reluctant eaters to enjoy breakfast in the morning, then they are serving a purpose.  However, neither myself or my kids like the idea of having a sweet, chocolatey breakfast and will stick to original Cheerios.

Take a look at the Cheerios Facebook page.

Little Girls Get Bigger Everyday

This weekend my childhood friend Allie and her daughter Jess came to stay.  It has been a long time since we have all been together, but time just melted away.  Jess is the same age as Ella.  Allie and I were pregnant at the same time and when we had our baby girls, they were always destined to be friends. There is just seven weeks between them. Over the years, distance has meant that we could not spend as much time together as we would have liked, but when we do meet up, the relationship between us all is simply fabulous!

The first picture shows Ella and Jess when they were aged just 3 months and 5 months old.  The second picture was taken at the weekend.  Our two baby girls are now two beautiful sixteen year olds with the world at their feet, and we are so proud of them!

Skeanie Shoes For Little Feet

Skeanie shoes are the most adorable soft leather shoes that nurture and protect children's little feet.  Made to be eco-friendly and hand-crafted using leather off cuts, Skeanie shoes come in a variety of stylish designs for young children from birth to about 3 years old (European size 28).  They have soft, pliable rubber soles which mimic the experience of being bare footed allowing for natural muscle development in the feet and improving balance.  The shoes are designed to fit infant feet with wide ends giving plenty of room for wiggling toes.  Flex-Ease technology is used in the heel to ensure that the shoes are easy to slip on but stay put on the feet making them safe and secure.

Freddy was sent a pair of very stylish navy blue leather Boat Shoes to try out.   With feature stitching, velcro fasteners, soft breathable leather upper, pliable sole and a classic design, these shoes are both gorgeous and practical.  The leather is just so luxuriously, buttery soft and the workmanship exudes quality.  The shoes are quite lightweight yet strong, and the flexibility of the durable sole makes them very easy for a toddler to wear.

The Skeanie website comes with a guide to measuring your child's foot along with a downloadable shoe sizing print-out so you can order with confidence.  I used the print-out to measure Fred's feet and the shoes I received are a perfect fit for him.

Freddy loves his new shoes.  The sole is pliable but still robust enough to protect the feet from the ground and the weather so they are great for outdoors.  He has run, jumped, climbed, ridden his bike and played hard with his Skeanie Shoes and they have proven to be very comfortable and hard wearing.  I love how smart they look on him!  They are suitable for any special occasion or perfect for everyday use.  And I love the fact that his little feet are being well looked after!

Skeanie have both an Infant and Junior range with lots of beautifully designed footwear for little boys and girls.  The Skeanie Navy Boat Shoes cost £34.99 which is a great price for a pair of high quality children's shoes.
