Rockford's Rock Opera...An Adventure in Sound

Music is a fundamental part of life Inside the Wendy House.  From my own teenaged songstress, to my guitar playing husband to my all singing, all dancing little ones, not a moment goes by where our love of music does not figure in some way.

So when I was offered the chance to review Rockford's Rock Opera I was only too happy to be able to introduce something new into my home for my music loving family to enjoy.  I'm so glad I did.

Created by Sweetapple and written by comedian Steve Punt, it is an adventure like no other.  An amazing story where sound effects, narration, fantastic characters and wonderful songs combine to create a unique adventure in sound.  The central character is Rockford the dog.

The story tells us about the far, away Sea of Tranquility where the Island of Infinity lies.  Here is home to the last one of every extinct animal species, the world's lost creatures.  And they have a secret for the world!

The Rockford's Rock Opera is a triple CD pack.  The complete story of Rockford's Rock Opera is told in three parts.  Each enhanced CD features an animated video bringing the story to life and comes with a 24 page illustrated booklet featuring the song lyrics.

The Rockford's Rock Opera is like an audio book which tells a beautiful story with great songs.  It is quite dark in parts but is ultimately about hope.  At two and a half hours long it is perfect for a long car journey (which is how we first listened to it!)  It is an entertaining tale with memorable tunes, fantastical creatures and great music.  "The Cocklebur Ick" song has become a family favourite with its catchy chorus!

The most powerful thing about this Rock Opera is the message contained within the songs.  The idea that we can learn so much from the world and its vast array of inhabitants, many of which have been around for millions of years. It reminds us of the tragedy of extinction.  It teaches us to respect our world, to listen, to look, to learn.  The power to save the planet is here...we just have to find it!  In these times when children are so clued up on the environment, this comes as a real breath of fresh air and food for thought about the future of our planet (albeit in a fictional, fantastical way!)

For more details, sample music and to buy a copy, check out their website.  For just £15.99 you could own this stunning piece of musical storytelling!

Snazaroo Face Paint Sticks

Snazaroo is the "world's favourite face and body paint". Their new Face Painting Sticks are really child friendly, ready to use, easy to remove and completely non-toxic.  The unisex colour set that we were sent to review includes bright primary coloured, green, black and white sticks.

The wrappers are easy to peel away, revealing the face paint stick. They are ready to use without the need for water, so they are a less messy option for young children. The sticks are quite soft and not at all scratchy making them perfect for children's skin. They are quite thick and feel strong, so hopefully won't snap under normal usage.

Kizzy released her inner artist as she set about face painting her sister.  She drew a butterfly on her cheek.  I was quite impressed with how well the stick worked.  Some face paints don't transfer well onto the skin, but these did.  The colours were strong.  Obviously though, you don't get the same precision as you would with a fine paint brush and face paint palette.  But these are really for children to use on themselves or on each other,  just for fun!   Children can use their skin as a canvas for their designs and get creative.

Kizzy really enjoyed doing some artwork on her feet.  She drew faces, butterflies, sunshines and flowers.  It made a nice change for her to doodle on herself instead of on paper!  It really kept her amused, far more than I would have predicted.

When it came to cleaning it off, a wipe with a baby wipe did the trick.  It can also be washed off with soap and water.  They didn't aggravate the skin at all.

My only criticism is that because they come in a blister pack, once they are opened you don't have a container to keep them in.  A box or plastic pack would keep them together and prevent them getting damaged or dirty.

But overall we thought the Face Paint Sticks were a great product, perfect for a rainy day activity or an arts session.  Children love face painting and this is a non-messy, easy way for them to enjoy it.

The Snazaroo Face Paint Sticks cost £4.99.  Look out for them and other Snazaroo face paint products instore at Toys R Us.

Galt Nail Art...a Toyology Review

The Galt Nail Art set is the exact toy that my 8 year old daughter adores.  An activity set that is all about beauty and fashion.

The set contains 7 nail polishes, tattoos, nail gems, holographic stickers and a funky star shaped nail file.  Everything you need to create some fabulous nail and hand art with cool artistic designs.

There was no instruction leaflet but it didn't hold back Kizzy at all.  With her two older sisters and me as willing models she set to work applying nail varnish.  The colours were subtle and pearlised and went on very evenly.  The two glitter nail  varnishes added sparkle!

The gems came in different shapes and colours and stuck well.  The tattoos came in fun and funky designs and were applied simply using water to dampen the paper from the back of the tattoo.

The set contains plenty of materials for many a manicure!  The nail varnish is not that peelable stuff you find in some children's sets, it is the real deal.  So long after the stickers, gems and tattoos are used up, the nail varnish will still be going strong.

We spent a happy hour or two doing mani's.  It is a lovely activity for a bit of girlie fun.  It nurtures creativity and also helps develop hand eye co-ordination within the art of applying nail polish!  The suggested age range is 7+.  I can imagine it being a bit messy in the hands of younger children so I think that is spot on.  It would be perfect for a sleepover/make-over activity for young girls.  It would be a nice rainy day activity too...just watch the carpet, clothing and furniture!

It sells for £5.99 in Toys R Us which is great value for money.  Kizzy loved it!

Christmas in July 2011

The sun had just risen as we set off on the 180 mile journey to London to experience Christmas in July!  I know that time is flying by...but seriously, thinking about Christmas in summer!  Apparently though, while most of us are hoping to soak up the summer sun, the retail industry has its sights set firmly on December 25th, hoping their their products will be this year's must have!  For the toy trade this is an extremely important time as they begin the marketing that will hopefully see their toys on every child's letter to Santa.

Christmas in July was like a giant toy shop showcasing all the wannabe must haves that will be showing up under Christmas trees and in stockings this year.  I attended as a panellist Mummy Blogger who was helping to decide which of the toys on display would have the Mum's Choice seal of approval.  It was a tough job...but somebody had to do it!

There were toys suitable for tots to teens and some that the whole family would enjoy.  With brands such as Flair, Trunki, Drummond Toys and Megabloks, there were some well known household names displaying their products alongside lesser known brands such as Red Tool Box and Globee.  It made for an interesting mix of toys.

It wasn't easy picking five favourites in each category (ie Boys', Girls', Pre-School, Gadgets, Creative, Games and Puzzles etc.) from the exciting and diverse range of toys as there were so many great products, but here are some of my personal highlights from the day.

Bladez Toys Pump & Play are an innovative jumbo sized inflatable range of remote control toys.  With a piggy, a puppy, a cement mixer and a racing car to choose from, there is a style that would delight any child.  They were easy to control and because they were so big, it made the experience all the more fun!  After play, they can be deflated and stored away easily.  Simply inflate with the included pump and they are ready to play with. They are lightweight, durable and furniture friendly and can be used in small spaces using the 360 degree spin feature.  Suitable for ages 3 and up, I think these are the most amazing child friendly remote controlled toys I've ever see.  I had a play with one and it was easy to manoeuvre and hugely fun.  (RRP £35)

Character have a fabulous range of Doctor Who 3D Micro figures.  They combine construction and collectability and include ten beautifully detailed figures!  Individual micro figures come in secret foil packs for £1.99 each and include the Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy Pond and an assortment of  most feared foes!  The component parts can be interchanged adding an element of fun.  Multi-packs are available and my absolute favourite was a collection of all eleven doctors.  Tom Baker was the first doctor I remember and his figure was instantly recognisable by his stripy scarf!  The Weeping Angels, Daleks and Cybermen made an impressive display.

Also from Character came DaGedar, an addictive game of speed and skill.  The collectible DaGedar balls are  dropped down the excitingly designed tracks where they swoosh through loops and jumps.  You can race to get to the end of the track adding a competitive element to the game. The balls were beautifully designed and had a really nice weight to them.  To really enjoy this game to the max, you'd need enough space to lay out the track.  From just £9.99, DaGedar is an action packed game that you can keep adding to.  It really is a bit addictive trying to get those balls through the twists and turns of the track.

With a Club Penguin fan in the house (aka Kizzy), how could I not include this fabulous air-hockey table from Flair!  The compact sized table was sturdy and the characters were solid and well made.  The icy adventures enjoyed online by Club Penguin fans translate beautifully to merchandise. This would be a perfect game for the family on Christmas Day.  I had a good game with QWERTY Mum...she won!  But it was great fun! My kids would love it.  Also the range of plush Puffles would be a huge hit Inside the Wendy House!

Paper Jamz guitars are a toy that has bypassed me, but after having a go I think I'm a convert.  They are so much better than I imagined them to be.  They are sturdy and you can play power chords on them.  They were really fun

You can download your favourite songs onto them to play along to and you can be an instant rock god or goddess!  There are loads of designs to choose from and you can also add an amp or microphone.  Perfect for budding rock stars!

My 2 year old loves Disney Junior and will be over the moon if Santa brings him any of Flair's new collection of character figures and playsets from the popular Jungle Junction TV Show.

It's the perfect Jungle Junction experience for pre-schoolers.  The Jungle play set allows children to re-enact scenes involving their favourite characters Ellyvan and Zooter and includes their houses, the school, the clock tower and a working elevator all joined together by a track roadway.  It is so nicely made and  my little boy would love it!

The display of toys that had all been picked as favourites of the show included many of my top choices.  Hexbugs, Micro Scooters and Zhu Zhu Pets were also tipped to be the toys that kids would be asking for this year.

One stand out product in the nominated toys is the Red Tool Box range of real carpentry tools made for children.  The innovative concept offers parents the opportunity to spend more time with their children while they learn new skills. With help from a parent, a child can make a range of items from a beginner's treasure chest to an advanced toolbox.  You can even make a mini billiard table!  The tools are real tools...maintaining the performance of the adult versions.  So parental guidance is an absolute must.  But it is lovely to have an activity that a parent and child can do together, learning new skills and making lovely wooden items in the process!

It was a great day made even better because I met up with lots of lovely bloggers over a delicious lunch.  I love being a part of this community.  Thanks ladies...you know who you all are!

The results are due soon...what will be this year's Christmas must haves???

The Gallery...Grandparents

Tara's prompt for this week's Gallery is Grandparents.

I have thought of lots of different ways to interpret this theme.  My own children adore my parents who they see every week, and I'm so happy they are creating strong and happy memories of their time together.

However, I am dedicating my post to my own grandparents. Bill and Joan were my maternal grandparents,  Eliza and Jim were my paternal grandparents.

Sadly, three of my grandparents died when I was a child but I still have wonderful memories of them all.

My maternal Grandad  used to build us wooden dolls' houses in his shed where he had a spider that he used to call his pet.  There was a cherry tree outside the shed and I used to eat my body weight in its fruit.
Our Nan used to make amazing roast potatoes when we went for Sunday dinner at her house.  She lived to be 98 and so four of my children had the privilege of knowing and loving her.  I'm so grateful that they had the honour of having a wonderful great grandma!

My paternal grandparents lived in Birmingham and so we saw them less often but I remember my nan being a wonderful singer and singing to my grandad at a wedding anniversary party.  They used sterilised milk in their tea and had a nutcracker shaped like an animal in their kitchen.  They used to go hop picking every year.

I found a picture of my own parent's wedding with both sets of grandparents, long before us grandkids came along.  It is such a wonderful thing to delve into your own past and look back at those that came before you.  I love the fact that I can see traits of myself and of my children in the faces of my grandparents.  I love how funny quirks or mannerisms in my children sometimes seem so familiar.

One day soon I might become a grandparent, my eldest is 23 this year.  I can imagine how amazing it must be to see your own genes passed on to a whole new generation.  We are forever a living reminder of those who came before us.  That is one of the greatest joys of family.  It is eternal.

Listography...Thing I Want To Do This Summer

This week it's a case of Listography with Keith Takes 5 (a.k.a. Chronicles of a Reluctant Housedad ) whilst Kate sets up the new Parent Bloggers Network with Netmums.  (If you haven't signed up already...do it now!)

So Keith has us looking ahead to the Summer and what we want to do.

1:  I have so many things going on, I'm hoping I'll have time to get everything done...so my first thing I want to do is get organised enough to arrange all the trips, visits, events and hotel stays that we have planned!  From my Four Seasons Hotel win from Cybermummy to guest editing Real People Magazine in London to using my Drayton Manor Park Tickets I won from Tots 100...I have so many blogging related things on the calendar.  I'll say it again...blogging has totally changed my life, increased my confidence and given me a purpose in addition to being a mum and wife.

2: I want to take Freddy to the seaside.  We're not going away on holiday this year...but I want to let him experience the beach: paddling, rock pools, sandcastles and ice creams!

My girls in 2005 x

3:  Walk...I want to go on lots of walks with the kids.  We've got lots of lovely countryside to explore and I intend to do it!  We bought a book of family friendly walks last year and it is still unused!  I aim to remedy that!

4: I want to do lots of cooking. Nice, healthy meals. With the kids to entertain Freddy I can spend more time doing the domestic thing.  I'm not great at getting up the enthusiasm for creating culinary masterpieces, but once I get into the mood I really enjoy cooking.  So I definitely want to discover lots of new recipes for veggie cuisine over the holidays!

5:  I want to avoid sunburn, wasp stings and heat stroke.  I want to eat healthily, get fitter and have an absolute blast with my family!!

Mumentum

My Mumentum posts are getting a bit dull...since using the Slimpods my attitudes have changed and I'm no longer battling my demons, binge eating or embarking on the next yo-yo diet.  The weight loss has slowed down but as I'm now in it for the long haul, I'm no longer stressing over the scales!

There are steps I can take to up the ante if I need to.  I still have a biggish evening meal which I insist on finishing.  I do feel full, but the part of me that has had it ingrained in me to 'clear my plate' can't quite bring myself to leave food.  But as my meals consist of healthy veggie fayre, I'm not too worried about it.  I just need to get the portion control sorted out using my Diet Plate.  I think that holds the key to my next step!

As for exercise, I know I should try and find something that I can do to get the blood pumping.  In the past I have done yoga, Pilates, holistic toning and attended the gym.  However every time I have done exercise, I have put my back out.  Even the back strengthening yoga poses have been known to do me damage.  It was after I had Ella 15 years ago that I damaged my spine.  X Rays showed I had slight scoliosis and her birth aggravated it to the extent that I found it hard to stand up and straighten my back.  It took a year to get better, but everytime I did any exercise it flared up giving me pain and a weakness in my legs.  It took me years to realise that my attempts to strengthen it were actually making my condition worse.  Any twisting, jolting or anything that put any undue pressure on my spine would set me back.

Since giving up the gym my back has been fine!  Oh the irony!!   But I'm not getting any real exercise.  Walking is the only thing left for me (I hate swimming and won't even consider that as an option!!).  So I hope this summer I will get off my arse and do a lot more walking with the kids...not just around the local shopping centre either!  I want to get out and about in the fresh air.  So that is my resolve...to try and improve my fitness...without crippling my back!! Plus it'll be tonnes of fun!

Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton Do Fashion!

There is no denying that these two boys know how to drive!  But what happens when you get them into a photographic studio to do a fashion shoot based on British Summer? Lewis grabs the camera, Jensen grabs the props and together they get closer to fashion!

What do you think?  Did the boys pull it off?  Was the horse too much?  You decide!

Jurassic Park Comes to Chester

If you are able to visit Chester Zoo between now and October 8th, you are in for a pre-historic treat with the Dinosaurs at Large exhibition.  Life size, animatronic models bring to life these magnificent beasts who roar, swish their tails and shake their heads!  Here are my photos of some of the dinosaurs on display....seriously...they were so cool!

I remember as a child going to a museum in London for a dinosaur exhibition.  I recall being so disappointed by the flat, lifeless models on display.  I was expecting so much more.  The dinosaurs at Chester Zoo are exactly how I wanted the dinosaurs to be when I was a child.  The sound, movement and realism were spot on.  Both me and Ian were a bit excited by the display!

If you are considering any days out for the Summer Holidays, I'd definitely recommend Chester Zoo and the Dinosaurs at Large exhibit!

My Menagerie of Photographs

I had a go at trying to be a bit of a wildlife photographer while I was at Chester Zoo this weekend.  I have a Lumix G2 camera but I'm still at a loss how to use all the buttons and settings, but I am giving it my best shot!  Here are a handful of the pictures I took.

Butterfly that looked like a leaf!
Java Sparrow that chattered to us from a branch.
Giraffe (who was very tall!)
Chimpanzee...he seemed to be the boss of the monkey world.
Hornbill (it looks plastic but it was real, honest!)
My girls pretending to be a Giant Tortoise!
One day I hope to make my camera proud and do it proper credit...but I'm quite pleased with these shots in the mean time.  Photography is something I so want to grasp.  It is such a learning curve, but as long as I'm having fun with it, I'll carry on trying.

We're Going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo!!

Next week Freddy is 2 and we have been lucky enough to get a pre-birthday visit to Chester Zoo courtesy of Superbreak.  Freddy adores animals so I was really excited about taking him to see creatures bigger than his pet hamster Spinky!  I can't even begin to imagine how amazing it must be for a toddler to set his eyes upon an elephant or a giraffe for the first time!

There was ample free parking at the zoo which was just a short walk to the main gates. It was good to have our pre-printed ticket from Superbreak which meant we could take the Fast Track entrance into the zoo, bypassing the queues.  This would be really useful during busy peak times.  On entry we were photographed in front of a green screen....more on that later!

The elephants are the first main attraction you see.  Their enclosure is big and the elephants looked happy and relaxed and entertained by their environment which really pleased me!

The zoo has over 7000 animals from over 400 different species so we had a lot to see!  Thankfully the sun was shining and we were keen to explore the attractions armed with the free map.

Freddy was delighted and amazed as he looked at the wonderful animals on display.  The enclosures were all thoughtfully designed and all the animals looked most content.

Around the zoo were lots of interactive and educational activities for the children.  The children learned a lot about the animals, their habitats and conservation issues affecting them.  It was very hands on.  There were also regular talks by the zoo keepers throughout the day.

Everything was clean, tidy and well maintained. The grounds were lovely with loads of seating, picnic areas and grass lawns to rest on. Various statues and artefacts were dotted about making loads of photo opportunities. Freddy took a shine to this bronze Komodo Dragon.

We had our lunch in June's Pavillion which was a really spacious building, decked out with a modern wood interior.  It sold hot food from a range of counters.  We had veggie burgers, chips and salad priced at £6.  We were pretty impressed by the plateful we received!  So often you can be ripped off at attractions, but our lunch was great value and tasted good too!

Ice Cream from Cheshire Farm was on sale from an Ice Cream Parlour.  I indulged myself with a Summer Berry Sundae...well it did contribute to my five a day!

There is a fabulous new exhibit open until October 8th which is Dinosaurs at Large.  Life size animatronic dinosaurs bring to life the dinosaur era...it was like Jurassic Park, only safer!

The models were amazing, they swung their heads and tails, roared and even spat water at unsuspecting onlookers!

Some children were a bit over wrought at the sight of the T-Rex and there were some tears...but my lot loved it!  I thought it was great too.  You're never too old for dinosaurs!

There were informative signs giving information about the dinosaurs, their size, habitat and other fascinating facts.  I could relate to this dinosaur...Rugops a.k.a. Wrinkle Face!!

The shops were nice, well stocked and not at all over priced.  There were some really nice things to buy and Freddy picked out a T-Rex toy for £3.  He was clearly impressed by the Dinosaurs at Large exhibit!

Other highlights of the day included the Fruit Bat Forest where free flying bats swoop past your head, the Butterfly House where the beautiful butterflies land on you, the Orang Utans who were so impressive in their huge enclosure, swinging and climbing on the ropes and the Tropical Realm with exotic birds that you can view from a hide.

It was a tiring day...be prepared to walk miles around all the enclosures and exhibits.  There is a monorail and a waterbus but they are charged separately so we didn't go on them.  There are plenty of toilets, seating and snack kiosks which are essential when on a day out with little ones!  We had a fabulous day and we all really enjoyed everything the zoo had on offer.  As we left we saw the photos we had taken as we entered the zoo. Our family had been superimposed onto various scenes with some wild animals!  There was no pressure selling which was nice...but my girls wanted us to buy our photos.  So we are now the proud owners of some rather interesting souvenir pics, postcards, a fridge magnet and a keyring which cost £17!!!

It really is a great day for all of the family.  It is nice to have a mix of entertainment, education, information and conservation all going on hand in hand.  The animals are clearly happy and well cared for.  The grounds and facilities are well kept.  There is lots to see and do.  We were impressed by the food available and the vegetarian options on offer.  The shops stock a great range of well priced merchandise...with lots of pocket money priced things for the kids.
